The Connection |
We often label a person as a leader based on the successes achieved. We may not have the privilege of looking on as they journey to those successes. Many people are successful but often at a cost to others, their success or drive may have caused de-motivation in others, hurt feelings, loss of confidence, lack of mastery of interpersonal skills. A completion of a project can leave a number of wounded and dead bodies on the way to that individual’s personal success.

COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY |
When I told a friend that I wanted to write a Tool Kit for Leaders, he wasn’t sure the Tool Kit was the way to go. He believes because conversations are mercurial due to individual characteristics of people, a Tool Kit wouldn’t give the Leader the necessary tools to manage or adapt to every conversation or conflict. One thing he said is very true, conversations are never the same, because people are not the same, and Leaders must be able to adapt, to adjust to various communication styles. Our ability to lead is clearly tied to our skill in communicating, being able to inspire people and provide positive feedback. So how do you discover your communication style and that of others? Through self assessment and discovery of your communication style: Are you a people person, action oriented,? Do you want the facts first, or are you the one with all the ideas? If you are one or more of these you not only communicate a certain way you behave a certain way. When I conduct Communication Workshops often participants have an “aha” moment and recognize why they respond the way they do. Quick Tips: Listen. Put yourself in the other person’s place. Communication the key to Succeeding in Leading |

So how do you become the leader that everyone admires and wants to work alongside for the victory? How do people like Barack Obama, Jack Welch and other leaders capture the attention and commitment of so many people? What do they have that you don’t have? Absolutely nothing! The difference is they chose to inspire and motivate, they chose to share a vision that would make a difference. Being a leader is about being a risk taker, it’s about being unflappable and able to “get through” the situation. Being able to see the prize and convincing others they want it too! So how do you begin the process of becoming a leader. You may already be a leader or well on the road to being one. So often we think leaders have to be the Barack Obama’s or the Jack Welch’s of the world, when in reality many leaders are ordinary people. They can be the teenagers who had an idea to make sure all military personnel overseas in Iran and Iraq had cellphones. Or the mothers that began MADD, they are all leaders. They had a vision and people believed in the vision and now work to make the vision a reality. Do you have a vision? Are you concerned with what is right? Do you take risks? If you said yes you are on your way! |

Leaders are about change and focus on leading people and achieving. Managers are about managing work, controlling outcomes and making decisions. |
